My name is Sue Curry and I am the Registered Manager of Kingsland Care Centre in Bangor and have been in this post since November 2014.
I trained as a Registered Nurse at Westminster Hospital, London and qualified in 1984. I have worked in the NHS for over 12 years in both hospital and community settings, primarily as a District Nurse and Midwife in the Scottish Borders.
My passion for palliative care and clinical excellence was realised when I moved to Northern Ireland and joined the voluntary sector as a Community Palliative Care Nurse Specialist 16 years ago. I have worked in senior management at Marie Curie Cancer Care and was the Hospice Manager at the Marie Curie Hospice in Belfast for 5 years. I also gained an MSc in Primary Care and General Practice which gave me a wider understanding of community colleagues and the interface with the multidisciplinary team.
My vision is to create a centre of excellence with nurses as clinical experts and care assistants who are highly skilled and able to deliver a high standard of care. With my new Deputy Manager Carla, together we are building a happy, supportive and collaborative team who embrace innovation and creativity in order to respond to the current challenges in delivering effective complex care in the nursing home environment.
There are 41 residents and families who have different and complex needs. Together with my team of staff and the support of the senior management team of Care Circle/Larchwood Care NI, we aim to bring a palliative care approach to ensure all residents receive holistic and best evidence-based care.
Away from work I love all sports and am a keen marathon runner. Live music and eating with friends and family help balance work and life. I love travelling and I am really looking forward to ticking off the top of my bucket list with a trip to New Zealand with my partner in December!
