Glebe - Boccia team (1)

In May, Margaret Graham, Josie Parkhill and Mabel Finnamore were selected to represent Glebe Care Centre in a Boccia tournament in the Spectrum Centre, Tennent Street, Belfast.

The tournament was run by Boccia N.I. and was funded as part of the “Getting Out There” programme in Newtownabbey.  The Glebe Trotters played very well despite fierce opposition from younger competitors.  Although the Glebe Trotters didn’t make it to the final, they all had a great day out, after all “it’s not the winning but the taking part that counts”.  The total age of the Glebe Trotters Boccia Team is 256 years!

We acknowledge how difficult it has been for you to be separated from your loved one over this challenging period dealing with the pandemic of COVID-19. We hope you have been satisfied with all communication efforts from the Home that has helped between the residents and yourself in the absence of visiting.

From the initial announcement of the Home closing, the main focus has always been the safety of all residents and staff within our care. I do hope you find it comforting to know that all of our Homes have managed extremely well throughout this crisis to date. We are delighted to share with you that out of 370 residents and over 550 staff across 8 Homes, we have had only 3 positive COVID-19 cases, each of whom have thankfully been nursed back to health and are currently doing well. Our staff teams have been superb and continue to demonstrate their dedication and commitment in keeping your loved one protected.

Following the recent announcement by the Health Minister, knowing that the safety of your resident continues to be your upmost priority, this will be the main focus when considering future visiting arrangements. To allow time for these important decisions to be made informatively, virtual visiting remains the preferred option as it provides the greatest protection for residents and staff while keeping footfall to a minimum.

However, if you are unsatisfied with virtual visiting arrangements, we can accommodate outdoor visiting on weekdays only, which will need to be arranged directly through the Home Manager in advance.

The following outdoor visiting conditions will apply:

  • The resident or you, the next of kin, must nominate two named visitors.
  • A maximum of 2 visitors per resident will be permitted at each visit.
  • Only 1 visit per resident per week will be accommodated.
  • Visitors will be required to provide their own face covering which is mandatory.
  • If you are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19 or feeling unwell in any way the visit should not take place.
  • A maximum 20 minute visiting period will be allocated.
  • No children will be permitted.
  • Social distancing principles of 2 metres must be observed at all times.

As an increase in the “R – factor” has been recently reported and further lockdowns have been reinstated in some areas, we are aware that a risk remains to the general public. We remain conscious that complacency could particularly impact residents living in our Care Homes and so we are continuing to monitor the situation and will notify you of any further updates in relation to visiting arrangements.

Finally, I would like to thank you for showing your support, understanding and patience which has been greatly appreciated at this time.

Many thanks as ever for your assistance,

Nuala Green
Managing Director
